Juanita

Juanita stood in the middle of the school with a devastated look on her face. She couldn’t believe it. Juan Oaks had just broken up with her in front of hundreds of students walking in the school hallway. He loudly accused her of being caught by the football team kissing the new boy who transferred from Florida. Hearing those hurtful words made her heart break into a million pieces. Everybody stared and laughed. She had never been so humiliated in her life.
Once she processed what had actually happened, she turned around and ran out the school doors with tears in her eyes. When she arrived home, she ran in her room and locked her door. Her mother ran in behind her and asked what was wrong. Juanita cried tears into her pillow and ignored everything her mother said. She just couldn’t believe that Juan believed this big lie. She knew his friends wanted to see them apart and he had let himself be tricked by their clever plan. Later on that night, her tears turned into complete anger and frustration. She was determined she would get Juan for making her look bad in front of everybody.
She put on her jacket and headed towards her front door. Before she walked out the door, she grabbed the biggest knife in her kitchen. As she walked to Juan’s house she began to shed more tears. When she got there, she demanded that he come outside and listen to her side of the story. He agreed, came out, however he still didn’t believe her. When Juan turned around to walk back in his house she stabbed him several times. His mother was watching through the window and ran outside. She couldn’t help Juan; he needed medical help. She got the phone and called 911. When they got there Juan was taken to the hospital and Juanita was arrested. (Brittany Johnson)

Jay

Jay remembered his fathers' words from this morning, "You go to school to get an education...Blah, Blah and Blah" (He dropped out and got a G.E.D.). Hearing the principal announce that student have 30 seconds to be in class forced him back to the present. His pace quickened to reflect this purpose and he rode the tide of loud, irrepressible black kids through the pack hallways of the former middle school. After making it on time, he plopped into his desk-chair and checked his pocket for the $5.00 he had for lunch money. (Mr. King)

FMA 10 Commandments

Love yourself first, never lie to yourself and only rely on yourself

Work now, play later, be assertaive

Don't hate, you are who you are

Don't leave the one you love for the one you like, treat them right or someone else will

Laugh now, cry later

Do not follow others, know what you want

Don't bite the hand that feeds you

Money isn't everything, be kind to others

Think before you act

Live where the wind blows, remember honesty is a lonely word

Seven Sins Seven Virtues

Gratefulness

by Mylandria Hunter

Who can be grateful?
Anyone can be grateful
Do you know how to be grateful?
Many people do
Are you one of the few?
Who can not only but also do
Having the desire to thank somebody
Having the will power to thank somebody
Showing the desire to thank somebody
Showing your love to somebody
Showing your appreciation to somebody
Showing your gratitude to somebody
Feeling thankfulness for somebody
Being willing to thank somebody
Expressing thanks to somebody
So when you think of the word gratefulness
Are you grateful for somebody?

Respect

Unknown

Respect, it’s far more than not stepping on someone’s shoe. It comes down to all the decisions you choose.

Respect, It needs to be given in order to be “got”, it ain’t all about being the hottest person on the block.

Respect, show a sense of self-control and when all hope is lost, you’ve got your pride to hold.

You shout about the lack of respect, but you need to do something about it, nothing will get accomplished by arguing, fighting and shouting.

Before you walk out that door, do a double check, cause you ain’t ready to leave without your respect.

For others and yourself and all the hatred that you felt, it’s gone, it’s been erased. It needs to be replaced.

Before you take a step, check your respect.

It doesn’t start with beating someone up in the bathroom. To tell you the truth it doesn’t start in the streets, Respect starts with you.

He Left Us

by Monica Hernandez

He left and left us, with his mess to clean up, he left with his love, his affection, his words , his family and his luggage, He left and left us, I still love him and I always will but ill always feel this loneliness that he left behind, He preferred his family & that’s how it was, So many years with out living with him, Without living with him, When I go, it feels weird, Now He tries to win our love and confidence, Even though he was mean with moms and us, I Want to leave with him when I feel the sadness dominates my feelings / emotions are the dark heavy raindrops the ones I want to see and feel, But just like he left us someone left him too, That’s why I’ll always Love Him, He Felt That Pain That We Felt, Not all Of It, But A Little, That’s Why Now All He Say’s Is, Sorry.!

You Can’t Have It All; I Mean Like, Where Would You Put It?

by Ayana Ruffin

An era of scarcity
A torpedoing, tanking economy
They grab all that they can get
But constantly forget
That they are not the only ones who need
Fire the workers; give a raise to the boss
Bail out the banks, send me a bill for your loss
We hide our stores and store our hide
All a reminder that something is eating us inside
They grab all that they can get
But constantly forget
There are thousands more to feed
What’s mine is mine, what’s yours is mine
No! You can’t have any you went apart of the deal
The pleasure is a matter of utmost precision
The content of opinion drives a selfish decision
Hold it close; keep your eyes open, there jus waiting for a steal
What’s their will be mine as soon as I see fit
Widen my arms and grab a hold a fit
They take and give not a bit of it away
Forgetting millions starve everyday
They require less but desire more
Discover the need change the score
A million to one the odds one always against me
A big man is always accused of gluttony
While the thin man eats like a refuge
And no one ever notices his greed
Not a secretive vice…nothing here to hide
A sign something is eating us inside
Constantly forgetting there’s many more who need
Maybe charity isn’t a virtue we can find
Gluttony is lust of the mind

Untitled

by Johnathan Tappin

The night whispers your name
But still I see nothing
Each night it is louder
But still no sight of the beauty in the wind
Everything is at a stand still
Waiting to find my beauty in the wind
Pacing back and forward
Find out there is no beauty in the wind
Just the soft spoken trees playing tricks again
One day I may find her or may just give in
To the thought of no one in the wind

ABANDONED

by Jasmine Whitehead

Independent from birth
No need for others
Just me, myself, and I
Now I’m feeling the pain
Retribution for the past
When I could simply let go

Mow there’s strings attached
I met my match
In limitless green eyes
But now I’m stranded

Abandoned

In place where I’m alone and cold
Wishing your arms could hold me

I WISH I COULD TAKE BACK TIME

by Anthony White

As I sit in class bored as ever.
My mind begins to wonder.
I began to wonder are we still together.
I began to wish, I could take back
Time, I wish I could rememver
How we use to be
We were always happy just me and her.
I wish I could take back time,
To the way things were

TWO

by Jasmine Drain

Life is to short to live alone
We need someone to call our own

To lift us through those terrible times
Please lend my your heart to hear those rhymes

To love us hen we’re feeling low
To guide us the right way to go

To give praise and receive it back
To give us joy, which some of us lack

To make bad thoughts go away
To love you each and everyday

To help you have a wonderful life
Even if they have to sacrifice

Do anything, just for you
…ONE is lonely, I’d rather it be TWO

WHO KNOWS

by jaclynn meldoi

Who knows what the world holds
We think we do
But we have no idea

And maybe we never will
All the pollution
All the violence

Can we make it through?
I think we can if we try.
Who knows what the future is

But maybe we can change it
It can’t be all about money,
Drugs, and gangs

Lets make a difference and
Change the world
Lets try and who knows…

Untitled

by Tyra Hitcher

You see the faults in me
That I never wanted
But always would be
You see what could be invisible
You see, but I never rally meant you to
Outer walls are now broken down
I sit sad on the ground
With my broken crown
Broken heart with pieces spread all around
The definition of words unfound
Repetition always make now sends
If you say it twice
It hurts less the second time it hits
If you try to find the faults in everyone
Don’t u know you’ll never get anywhere
From afar your voice make a difference
But not if you make fun of everybody existence
You have to be ignorant to the
Law, color, and faults
That is when ignorance is bliss
And when the compliments sound better
The second time they hit

No Chance on Love

by Amber Wilson

How could I
I actually believed

That someone could, would, should
Love me like I love them

So foolish of me
I should have known

Why do things happen
to girls that wanna love

We just want to love him
that special one
But he just won’t show
How much he cares

So we lock up
And take no chance on love

Untitled

by Nia Boome

There is room for a friend
Someone who is always there
We fight and argue, but
I know who you truly are.

You are my friend with
A mind that is beautifully created
I won’t let you sit here
And just waste it

We laugh and cry anytime together
I know you will be here though
Rainy and stormy
Weather.

This is for my friends
And I love with all my heart
I just thought you should
Know this because we
Will never part

Chicken

by Ahmeen Gaddy

We all love to eat good chicken
Afterwards we give our fingers a-likin
I love to eat it with sweet barbeque sauce
But after I have to remember to floss

Whether it be breast, thigh, or wing
Barbequed chicken is my favorite thing
Believe me, I can finish a breast
Just set down your plate... I’ll finish the rest

People who read this might think me overweight
But actually, in person, I’m looking quite great
then there’s the people who might call me fat
But, they can come give my stomach a pat

I know some people who live off of pork
And not one piece of chicken has been on their fork
Not one piece of chicken… how can this be?
For without chicken you can never be free

But now that my poem is almost yet done
To the Golden Corral buffet you must now run
You must go and get chicken, believe me, son

Untitled

Jakana Grant

As the world keeps turning
And old things vanish and
New things appear
I realize now that even
In the midst of the craved, I’m
More lonelier than ever
Not for friendship, but for love
To know that through anything
I’m still loved
To know with all the attitudes I catch
You’d always be there
To give my love and know your
Putting as much into it, do much as possible
But, I guess that’s not going to happen
Since the only dude I even really cared about is gone
I wish I could take back everything
I said, but then again I don’t
Somethings just have to be said
As the world keeps turning
I realize, I’m just experiencing life
I was woman enough to walk away and
break a heart
I’m woman enough to deal with my part
My heart was the heart that was broken from the start

What It Is What It Isn’t

by April Brown

It is love. It is love
On a good day, Yes. On a bad day, No
If the love is true. How do we know?

It is the truth. It isn’t the truth
Sometimes maybe, other times a lie
tired of trying to read between the lines

It is hope. It isn’t hope
For a better set of days or more days of sorrow
We never really had a promised tomorrow

It is real. It isn’t real
This thing we’re pretending to have
Let’s let it go now
And leave it in the past

That’s where it belongs
Because fake love never last

Short Stories

NORMAN

by Donnell Richardson

Roland Daniels sat at the Formica-topped center island of an ornate kitchen inside the Hemmingways’ home in Bangor, Maine. He had recently turned forty, and today would be the official marking of his latest contract hit. However, for the past four weeks he hadn’t been Roland Daniels, he had been Norman Watts instead. Norman was a thirty-five-year-old (Roland could easily play a thirty-five, or even thirty-year-old because of his young face) middle-class employee who worked in a small cubicle for a living, earned a low salary, had an ex-wife, no kids, and was known around the office for spending countless hours at the bars getting drunk. They sympathized for the “nice guy” in his harmless state.

Underneath his façade, he was under a lot of stress
He hid his pain and suffering by living under a mask
No one ever truly knew about his painful past

Your man was a beast a balled like Penny
This kid had everything

I drove down the lane, his legs were in pain,
Then I told him, "dats how you play da game."

Boast Poems

The Boast is a primary part of the Black expressive tradition. It is a part of our folklore, "Stagger Lee" and our music, "I'll take your Man". It encompasses the reality, perspective and fantasy of the author. Boasting is 1/3 statement, 1/3 wordplay and 1/3 competition. Our efforts will honestly reflect the thoughts and influences of our writers. As a medium of the field and the street, I have tried to change as little as possible to maintain the authentic expressions of our writers. What you may read here may seem crude and brash, however, that is the point. Boasts are meant to be hyperbolic, humorous and pointed.

Time to strap up and dominate
I have hands of glory
Just turn and say sorry
Running, joking, catching like Randy Moss
When I step on the field you can tell I’m the boss
Wearing #21 with pride
Running so fast when I stride
Jumping so high it look like I’m flying
Think you can check, now you know you lying
Running the route so clean
They screaming out, “HE SO MEAN”
A few more wins, then we going to state
You better get there quick, don’t be late
I’m just trying to make my mother smile
Give her a money pile that longer than a mile
I’m trying to make it to the pros
Of course there is going to be some lows
Touchdown, Touchdown that’s all you hear
When I step on the line the end is near
All ya’ll defenders soft like Pooh Bear
Catching over 300 yards
I’m so rich, I can buy you a credit card
I’m getting bored with this,,, yawn
It all started on the front lawn
Making your coach so mad
While we on other side are glad
You better get some more lesson from your dad
The crowed screaming out, “Go KNIGHTS”
As they say back in the day, we out of sight
I hit you so hard you going to see the light
You going to near a ringing in your head
You might think you are dead
You going to be on the bed rest
You not going to be able to study for that test
Sitting here laughing and jumping
While you over there crying and doing something
You going to try and take us to court
Saying we assaulted you of some sort
The judge saying its football
Just go on and lean on the wall
If you need a football player, you know who to call
I’m the first to do it like Obama
You will never be found like Osama
To you it’s just the game
But no, I don’t feel the same
You whole team is lame
Just sit back and smile like dame

Well you know my name
Not a stranger to the game
Always going to be Zee
No you can’t be the same

Carmel and about 5’8
Someone you can’t afford to date
Step out of the house unlock the gate
Looking fly, I’m that girl you love

Ohh! So flossy
Chick stay bossy
I’m going to be the queen
No matter how to shuffle
Never less than Louis on my duffle

You can call me the baddest
Cause your swagg is the saddest
You don’t have to lie to me
I’m what you try to be
To cute for ya to stand

I’m your dudes number one
Girl, but he not my man
But you my number one fan
So rich, you still in a recession
Your credit cards declined you
Sufferin depression

Chick you known as a 3 star
Can’t even afford your dream car
Pull up in my chevy Vette
Naw, you ain’t ready yet

Told you I was the queen, stay on the thrones
Short, thick, something like a red bone
your dude always on my phone
He aint never going come home

I’m the finest
Not your kind its
Life like Slick Rick
Like a movie flick

Got your dream house, dream car
You sittinin at the bar wish upon a star
Love to party
Fashionably tardy

Glitter, glamour, and lust
Got your man feelings bout to bust
Under all this fancy stuff
I’m a girl that is ruff
Not from the hood but the suburbs
Can’t rap but this rhythm is not for the lovers

Never been a hater, cause I’m the one
Not worried bout nothing, but having fun
Just remember that I’m the queen
Don’t care if I’m mean
Don’t try to imitate
Never try to duplicate
Yes! Fans I love you all
Haters keep hatin this doll

When I’m on the court,
It’s not a sport
When I dribble the rock
I make your ankles drop
When I drive the lane,
Your legs die on point
When it’s not a lot of time,
I tend to blow your mind.
When I pull up it’s scary
Kinda like Brent Barry
You’re not a challenge, you should stop it,
You try to pop it, but I block it.
When it’s 5 on Da clock, I tend to take the shot,
When I pause and I stop people’s eyes start to lock
The kid’s shot is like a bird, call me Larry
I might shake on Boo-Boo, on Carrie

Planters in your face
Come get a taste
Your minds on a race
But you’re in 5th place
When I’m on the court you always see me,
Just dribble down the court stop and take a deep 3
I’ma defensive monsta
Dribble, I’ll stop ya
You try to dribble down the lane
I’ll send it to the telapromter
I’ll make it from the line
When it’s not a lot of time
If a bum is dribbling the rock,
I might yell mine!

Like my gurl, my game’s fine
So just listen as I spit my rhymes
Come down the court pass the ball to Sheek,
My man dunk on 3 dudes, call him the freak
Or go the other way to pass the ball to Ish
When he shoots it always goes swish
But I’m telling you he better not miss
Cause, I might yell you messin’ up my assist
If I crap on your man he might smell like some ****
Then I’ll come and crap on you and you might get ******
If you ask me why I do it, I’ll tell you it’s my job
Then I’ll tell you boy stop slobbin on my nob
I know you like veggies, but it’s not corn on the cob
Leave you lookin real dumb, we’ll call you Bob
Sadly, I have to bring this rhyme to an end,
Cause, after I finish my career’s about to begin
So, when you are on the court don’t check me,
I am a duplicate of Ali,
I float like a butterfly sting like a bee,

Word!!

I Can Make You Fall in Love with Me

by Natasha Alston

Call me cupid, cause I got the arrow
The landing sounds like a sparrow
The bird sounds off, your heart beats
It goes a little faster as our eyes meet
Young girl, only seventeen
Nothing but a number, you know what I mean
I dominate a space
A smile comes to your face
There, it’s done
Yes, I won
You fell in love with me
It doesn’t mean your crazy
Your heart is steady racing
True love has you pacing
You want me to be your queen
The realist girl you ever seen
She got you breaking all the rules
Running round like a fool
Phone conversations are great
Even though, she don’t stay late
You take her out to eat
She like, he my treat
She’s into every fashion
But, she made you her passion
She got a lot on her plate
Getting ready to graduate
You start to diss your boys
All your exes making noise
She is thee girl of your dreams
But is she what she seems
Oops, I did it again
You fell in love with her then
I can make you fall in love with me
It was that easy
Come to find out she got a dude
You just assumed
that she was single
Ready and willing to mingle
Player you got played
She’s a monster another boy made
He made the girl cold
Now, she digging for souls
This is what a diss feels like
Spoken word, speaking the mike
Forget the girl, forget her name
She forgot you, what a shame
Man-eater, yeah she throwing you shade
What can you do now but downgrade
You fell in love with me
It doesn’t make you crazy

MISS CARRIE BABY

by Carrie Ginyard

I’m always in a pick-up game
Everybody scared that I came
It’s like 32, like magic
Dropping buckets is a habit
I think I want to play your dude one on one
Sometimes they let us girls win for fun
Cute pony tail in my hair
Another guy over there
Gotta make sure my lip gloss is poppin on the court
And if it’s not, the guys definitely won’t support
My dribbling and my cross over is sweet
You can tell by the way they all move there feet
I have been queen of the game since 9th grade
“MISS CARRIE BABY” is the name I made
Females get mad when I play their dude
I say, either have a jump shot or sue
I’m feeling really cocky
Sometimes when I shoot it shocks me
Just shot the icebreaker, we all need fur
Got dudes saying, bu-bu-burr, I’ma marry her
No time for relationships, cuz they make me late
I wish I can miss dudes like I miss court dates
I really love shooting buzzer beaters
It’s getting hot, who cut up the heater?
I’m almost so good that I can cherry pick it
It’s like doing 95 and I don’t get a ticket
All the females athletes, I’m taking ya’ll dudes
Oops, my bad, sorry gurlie gurls, you lose
I’m better than Shaq at free throws
No, this chick didn’t use her elbows
I make the game look so easy
Everybody trying to please me
I deserve to be with the pros
And even Candice Parker knows
You don’t need grades to play ball
They pay you to shop at malls
It’s like every time I step on the court
The people go running to the airport
I love what I do, son
When I do it it’s done
Beating me is like a failed mission
I think that’s the part you are missing
Even if the fame kills me, there is still no one above
Because, when push comes to shove basketball is still my love
